Lekela is an international organisation, with our people based in Senegal, Egypt, South Africa and the UK. We want to shine a light on the amazing work our people do across Africa and in Europe and hear directly from our employees on what life at Lekela is really like.

Each month, we’re speaking to different employees across Lekela to hear what they’re working on and what led them to this industry.

Today we’re speaking to Elhadji Makhtar-Sylla, HSE Supervisor at Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye, our 157.8 MW wind project in Senegal. Read below for some of Sylla’s thoughts on what led him to renewables and what a day in his life at work is like.

What led you to a career in renewables and to Lekela?

I have seen Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye from its very start.  Every morning I would pass by and see the enormous equipment of the wind turbines that we were handling.

It was a dream to come and work on this clean energy project. I joined after finishing a Masters’ programme in environment, where my professors kept telling me about the future of this sector. I also saw it as a great opportunity to leave the chemical industry, where I had been working for several years, for the renewable sector.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy the most is taking care of people – it’s in my nature to be a caretaker! I get great enjoyment from being responsible for health and safety, ensuring people’s wellbeing and that the environment we’re working in is safe.

What does a day in your life at work look like?

Each day, I make my rounds at the substation, sometimes at different axes of the project. There, I’ll check in on the hygiene of the area, its inventory and the safety of people and installations.

Other times, I’ll be dealing with visitors and various service providers, welcoming them to the site and carrying out safety inductions.

My role also involves issuing work permits and monitoring construction sites so that work can be done safely.

Is there anything else about your time at Lekela that you’d like to tell us about?

I’ve worked at many places throughout my professional career, but Lekela appealed me in particular – the management and approach the company takes continues to motivate me.
